Responsive Web Design:
What is it and why should I care?

ALL | COMPANY | NEWS | WEB DESIGN | MOBILE | ONLINE MARKETING | SOCIAL MEDIA

Responsive web design is a way of making a single website that works effectively on both desktop browsers and the myriad of mobile devices on the market. Responsive architecture gives the best quality browsing experience - whether on a smartphone, tablet, netbook or e-reader, and regardless of the operating system.
People who browse while on-the-go have very different needs than those sitting at a desk. Responsive web sites re-organize themselves automatically according to the device viewing them, so that the same website provides a great experience everywhere. Desktops get a full-blown interface with videos, large images and animations. Smartphones get a simplified website that runs fast without the bells and whistles. Tablets and netbooks get something in between.

How social media can impact business.

The use of social media is growing at an astronomical rate. With Facebook floating on the stock exchange at a mind boggling $104 billion, many naysayers predict a bubble. However, there is no denying the power of social media and the impact that it can have on the business of marketing. Tactics Social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Pinterest represent a huge opportunity for businesses to grab the attention of customers while simultaneously building a brand image.

Word of Mouth

Social media platforms provide the perfect opportunity to take advantage of word of mouth and to see it spread. Social media is growing at its fastest rate in developing countries. People are connected on a global scale and casually participate in each others lives through online observation. Something as simple as “Liking” a brand on Facebook can spread virally very quickly throughout the various social media channels. It is worth noting that individuals trust the opinions of their peers far more than a glossy magazine advert.

Communicating with Customers

Companies may see the spread of negative reviews about their products or services as a bad thing, when they can use it to their advantage. By utilising social media effectively, companies can reach out to dissatisfied customers directly, within their own social media environment, to find innovative ways of improving the product or service they have on offer.

Mobile Devices Drive 66 Percent Of Email Opens — Report

According to Movable Ink’s Q1 2014 US Consumer Device Preference Report email opens continue to migrate away from the desktop, which now represents a minority of all email opens. In addition, the tablet share of email opens continues to grow.

Movable Ink said that 66 percent of emails were opened on either a smartphone (47.2 percent) or tablet (18.5 percent) in Q1. That’s up slightly from the 65 percent in Q4. By contrast PC email opens were down to 34 percent.
Most mobile email opens happened on iOS devices. In fact there were more iPhone-driven email opens (38 percent) than on the PC as a whole (34 percent).

According to Movable Ink, iPhones and iPads represented just over half of all email opens (54.5 percent) in Q1. Android devices combined for 10.8 percent of all opens, which was down vs. Q4.
Apple device owners generally spent more time viewing emails as well.

Online Videos More Effective Than TV Advertising

Advertising executives admit the tide of ads is changing and online video ads are taking the lead, new research has found. 75% of ad agency executives say that online video ads are more effective than traditional TV ads, compared with just 17% who say they are less effective. That sentiment is shared when comparing online video ads with social media and search advertising ads as well. Ad executives feel that online video ads are also more effective than direct response and display ads, a new eMarketer report found.

"The popularity of digital video viewing is helping drive the expansion of the online video ad market," the eMarketer report read. "Ad execs may be responding to U.S. consumers’ seemingly endless demand for online video."

Americans Watched Record 10 Billion Online Video Ads in May

Americans viewed an all-time high of 10.076 billion online video ads during the 31 days of May, according to comScore's latest numbers. Hulu was the highest contributor to the 11-figure metric, with more than 1.666 billion video ads delivered, while Google/YouTube came in at a not-so-distant second place on the monthly Top 10 Video Ad Properties by Video Ads Viewed charts with 1.385 billion ads served. Brightroll also broke into the Billion Ads Served club to round out the top three spots, delivering 1.130 billion of them during the entirety of May.
Even more impressive about those 10.076 billion online video ads served is that the overall number of Americans who watched online videos dipped slightly from April to May, as did the total number of online videos consumed.

What is the difference between Responsive and Adaptive web design?

The hot topic for web developers and website owners is the way that websites can now automatically respond and adapt to any device with any screen size. This new way of web design optimizes the layout of the site to suit the screen size of the device it is being viewed on. There are two ways in which this can be achieve: with Responsive Web Design (RWD), coined by Ethan Marcotte, and with Adaptive Web Design (AWD), coined by Aaron Gustafson. Visitors to your site will not be concerned about which of the two methods you have used. This can simply come down to your or your designer’s preference. The user will not really notice a visible difference between the two methods but they do differ slightly.
If you’re interested in the technical aspects we explain them below.

Responsive Web Design (RWD)

The key elements that make up a Responsive website are CSS3, media queries, the @media rule, and fluid grids that use percentages to create a flexible foundation. It is also fundamental to use flexible images, flexible videos, fluid type and EM’s instead of pixels. All of these key points allow the responsive website to modify its layout to suit the device.
Responsive design is client-side which means the page is sent to the device browser (the client), and the browser then modifies the appearance of the page in relation to the size of the browser window.
The definition of a responsive website is that it will fluidly alter its composition to improve the accessibility of content depending on the screen size of the browser window.

Adaptive Web Design (AWD)

Adaptive web design uses predefined layouts that have been carefully constructed for a variety of screen sizes. A particular layout is activated when the screen size of the device viewing the website is detected and matched with a style sheet.
Adaptive design is predominantly server side. This means that the web server does all of the work of detecting the various devices and loading the correct style sheet depending on the attributes of the device. As well as the layout changing depending on the size of the screen they can also change depending on conditions like whether the device has a retina display or not. The server can detect this and display high quality images for retina display devices like iPads and lower quality images for standard-definition displays.
The downsides to AWD are that initial construction is very costly as you have a lot of layouts to design. Also to maintain and update all of these layouts can be very time consuming which will therefore cost a lot of money.
The definition of an adaptive website is one that has a set of predefined layouts that are activated when best suited to the device detected by the server.

Similarities and differences

The obvious similarity of both methods is that they improve accessibility of website content on mobile devices and various screen sizes. They also both provide visitors with an enhanced mobile-friendly user experience.
They are different in the way that they deliver the responsive / adaptive design to the user. RWD is dependent on fluid grids and AWD is relying on predefined size layouts. Also the fact that they either use client side or server side is another way in which they differ.
The visible difference is that responsive design will fluidly alter its layout while you resize your browser window whilst adaptive design will load a specific layout for the device you’re viewing the site on. If you resize your window with an adaptive website it will jump to a different breakpoint when you reach a screen size that suits another predefined layout.

How mobile devices are changing what designers do

The Pew Research Internet Project estimates that 63% of adult cell owners use their phones to access the Internet, and finds that 34% of cell Internet users go online mostly from their phones. Industry experts believe that by 2015 more traffic will come from mobile devices than from desktop or laptop computers.
Additionally, the variety of web-capable mobile devices (smartphones, notepads, and tablets) has expanded dramatically. Taken together, these factors have spurred a change in the way designers think when building websites.

Make Interaction Easy

Mobile users are, by definition, on the move. They do not have the time to jump hurdles when seeking to make a purchase or connect with a service provider. So from a design perspective, that means eliminating the barriers that could cause a prospective customer to look elsewhere.

Get Social

Social media is an increasingly large part of mobile marketing. Having a presence on Facebook and Twitter has become almost essential for businesses that want to stay connected with their clients, provide responsive customer service, and attract new business.

Stay Flexible

Market trends and products change quickly, especially in the mobile marketing world. The design of a client’s site should be flexible enough to adapt to market trends, new products or services, and changes in industry tone.

In this article we’ll go through a couple of our favorite web design styles of the moment, and the elements that you can combine to achieve them (and pretty much every other style around). Feel free to get inspired!

Photoshop Brush Tool basics: the Brush Panel

Brush Tip Shape

The Brush Tip Shape gives us several very interesting options. It’s best to explore them with a unique brush shape, so I’ve selected the Leaf Brush to demonstrate. I’ve also unchecked all of the other category settings to isolate just the single functionality for now.

Spacing

Though it’s at the bottom of the panel, lets start by exploring the Spacing, a very powerful option. Per default the spacing is set to 25% for the Leaf Brush. Play around to adjust the spacing for your stroke, which will look different for each brush.

Roundness

Roundness can also be set using the small preview image. This time you must click the small dot in the bottom or at the top of the small image and drag up or down. And again, as an alternative you can type the value into the edit field.

Hardness

Hardness gives you control over the brush edge. 0% produces a soft blurred edge, while 100% makes a sharp and crisp edge

Scatter

This is how spread out the brush tips are. With a Scatter of 0% the leaf will be in a perfect horizontal line. In the image below you can see how the leaf scatters out from this line when we move the slider to around 121%.

Copyright vs. trademark: what’s the difference?

There’s no getting around it: designers and creatives of all types need to understand intellectual property law. This is so we can protect our own work in an age when images circulate freely around the Internet, as well as make sure we are providing viable products to our clients.
While this may sound like a tough, even overwhelming responsibility, it becomes much less daunting when you do away with abstractions and legal jargon and just explain the rules in simple terms. Here we’re going to explore one basic question that tends to cause needless confusion: what’s the difference between copyright and trademark?

wireframe

Wireframes are an important design tool used in Web development. It is a visualization tool for presenting proposed functions, structure and content of a Web page or Web site. A wireframe separates the graphic elements of a Web site from the functional elements in such a way that Web teams can easily explain how users will interact with the Web site. A typical wireframe includes:
(1) key page elements and their location, such as header, footer, navigation, content objects, branding elements, (2) grouping of elements, such as side bars, navigation bars, content areas, (3) labeling, page title, navigation links, headings to content objects, and (4) place holders, content text and images.

Google's driverless car will need
more testing, watchdog group warns

Self-driving prototypes will have manual controls to allow humans to override the autonomous driving systems. But Google plans to build the bulk of the cars as fully autonomous — no steering wheel, gas pedal or brake pedal.

consumer group wants the California Department of Motor Vehicles to slow Google’s rush to get driverless cars on the road. Consumer Watchdog said the state’s regulations don’t allow enough time to test the self-driving cars before allowing them on California streets and highways.

“We urge the DMV to follow a sensible and deliberate approach that would require adequate testing and time to analyze the test results,” wrote John M. Simpson, Consumer Watchdog’s Privacy Project director, in a letter to DMV Director Jean Shiomoto. The main rules are that the manufacturer must use specially trained test drivers who sit in the driver's seat and can take control of the vehicle, that any accidents or situation where the autonomous technology disengages during operation must be reported to the DMV and that the manufacturer is required to maintain $5 million in insurance or surety bonds.

The DMV said rules governing the public operation of self-driving cars are expected to be adopted by Jan. 1, 2015.

Action starts today, vibrant Brazil set for football World Cup!

Rio de Janeiro: It`s show time in Brazil and the journey to Rio is finally over! The 2014 Fifa World Cup begins on Thursday with hosts Brazil playing the tournament opener against Croatia.

The month-long tournament sees 32 nations compete for a place in the final in Rio on Sunday, 13 July.

The journey hasn`t been an easy one with construction and stadium delays that threatened to take some shine off. In the bigger picture lies the ongoing protests in major cities against the excessive spendings for the event amidst financial and employment crunch. But overall Brazil will hope to put all the hardships behind and will look to kick off with the event in style and what more than starting off with a victory.

The opening match will be preceded by a ceremony in Sao Paulo that pays tribute to nature, people and football. Like the Olympic Games, this international event cannot begin without fanfare. As host, Brazil has planned an extraordinary show that will remind onlookers of the nation itself.

Career Advice For Graduating Web Design Students

It’s that time of year again: graduation, when students transition away from the classroom to what will hopefully be a long and successful career in their chosen industry. I recently said goodbye to some of my own website design and development students. Instead of teaching lessons in design principles or responsive websites, I spent our final evening together answering their questions. One of those questions was, “What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?”

At the time, I didn’t have an answer. I could think of many instances when someone helped me solve a particularly complex design challenge or a complex CSS issue or helped me navigate a delicate client situation, but I wouldn’t consider those “best career advice” moments. After thinking about it for a week or so, I came up with four pieces of advice that I received early in my career and that were invaluable to me as I was getting started in this industry but that are just as relevant and useful to me today.

Learn To Solve Problems

Whether you consider yourself more of a designer or a developer, your real job is to solve your clients’ problems. Yes, a visually rich design with great typography, powerful imagery and a user experience that works great on a wide range of screen sizes is very important. So is clean code that scales to future needs and conforms to best practices. Still, great design and well-written code are not the reasons clients hire you; they expect those things as part of the package.

Challenge Yourself

Focusing on what you do best is tempting. If you are a good designer, then continually honing your design skills is an easy road to take. This might be good early in your career, allowing you to build on your strength as you get some experience under your belt. After a while, though, it will limit you.

Top Website Design Trends to Implement in 2014

The web as we know it is over 20 years old. As with anything that grows, the world wide web has changed dramatically over the last two decades. Like the internet, website design techniques constantly evolve to enhance the user experience.

While not all of the upcoming trends may be appropriate for your website redesign or audience, it’s good to know what’s available and popular so you can effectively and efficiently reach your visitors.

2014 Website Design Trends

Parallax scrolling

Parallax scrolling brings websites to life while adding depth to images and text. Examples of this technique include changing graphics or animations so that they start to play as you scroll past them on a page.

This scrolling technique implements HTML5 and CSS3 for a low-cost, cosmetic design solution that can boost the wow-factor of your site.

Single page design

Websites usually have a handful of pages that you can access using navigation links. Smaller sites with less content are easing away from this model to a simpler one, incorporating images and content onto a single web page.

Single page design often utilizes parallax scrolling so visitors do not have to search through many pages to find the most important information.

While this trend is great for removing unnecessary clutter, it may not be the best if your site is content-rich, or if you are aiming to increase its SEO.

Fixed headers

The hot trend in 2014 for content-rich websites is a fixed header bar at the top of the page. A fixed header stays put on a browser window and doesn’t disappear as a visitor scrolls down the page. This technique makes it easier to navigate between pages within the site instead of scrolling back to the top of the page.

Responsive website design

Responsive design streamlines the process of designing a website for both desktop and mobile, ensuring that the website content looks consistent and works seamlessly for all device sizes.

Flat Web design

Windows 8, Facebook and Gmail all use it —- a flat Web design and user interface that capitalizes on simplicity. Flat design does away with heavy gradients, shadows, unnecessary decorations, three-dimensional effects and images that don’t add value to the content.

Instead, the emphasis is on bold lines, creative typography and saturated colors. This design technique offers a cleaner look for content that’s easier to scan and process. Flat design can enhance a website’s responsive design and allow pages to load faster.

Larger Font Sizes

While 12-point font is great for school papers, it can be difficult to read on a computer screen and seemingly impossible to see on some mobile devices. 2014 is the year when website redesigns will include larger text that’s attention-grabbing, readable and easier on the eyes.

A solid, focused web design is more important than a trendy one that doesn’t serve a purpose. As you plan your changes with a web designer, take into consideration your goals for the site, your company’s objectives and values, and key conversion points that you want to enhance.

Why Design Is So Important In Apps

The first impression public get from finding an app can go a long way in shaping that app's success. The user experience is completely significant. This is actually quite easy to test-simply ask yourself how many apps you are using and how many you know about. Then, you have to ask yourself why you are using those particular apps.

Attractive Design Is Motivating

Who doesn’t love fun? Entertaining means alluring and fascinating. Amazing apps designed with the right percentage of 'cool' texture, 'cunning' proper 3D effects among other attributes colours, are perceived as awesome and will be used more than other apps.

Brilliant Design Boosts Profit

Design will determine how profitable the app will be. The apps that are downloaded by users because they are free or highly touted but are barely used? Those are the ones that have awful design. But if you have an incredible design? Then a lot of people will notice and you won’t have to spend a lot of your budget on marketing.

Design Provides Uniqueness And Loyalty To The Brand

The perfect design is very easily remembered, as well as being attractive. The companies that own the largest market share (like Facebook and Apple) have become a natural part of life of their users.

Facebook Offers High School Students Free Wi-Fi as Part of Pilot Program

Facebook is moving ahead with its master plan to get the entire world online..

A year after unveiling Internet.org, Facebook announced on Tuesday a pilot program that aims to provide free wireless Internet to students in the Rutherford County School District in Forest City, North Carolina— the same city that houses one of the company's massive data centers.

It's the first time that Facebook has provided free Wi-Fi to students, and could be the first of many such partnerships to come if the program is successful.

In 2011, the school district approved an initiative to provide a personal laptop to all of its 6,000 students, but half of them don't have wireless Internet at home, according to a Facebook blog post. The tech giant is partnering with both the school district and PANGAEA Internet, an N.C.-based Internet provider. As of Tuesday, the test included just 75 to 100 homes, but Facebook expects that number to increase.

Mobile Websites VS Mobile Apps

It’s common knowledge these days that having a mobile presence for your business is one of the best things you can do. Being accessible to your customers via mobile is simply smart business nowadays, as such a huge percentage of people are surfing the web and conducting business solely via mobile.

We’ll explore the differences between a mobile website and a mobile app so you can make an educated decision on which one can propel your business forward.

Mobile Websites
A mobile website is basically just a website that is optimized specifically for smaller screens, often has touch-screen capabilities and is more streamlined for ease of access and visibility. They are designed to be accessible through any mobile browser on almost all smart phones. All you have to do is type in the URL on your device, and the site automatically detects that it is being accessed through a mobile device, changing its settings to optimized media.

Mobile Apps
A mobile app is a bit more engaging, and to many people, better. An app must be downloaded and installed to your device, such as a smart phone or tablet. You access it from a mobile marketplace like Google Play, the Apple App Store, or Amazon Marketplace (and others). While it takes more effort to download and install (and more room on your device, of course), it offers specific features and functions that websites do not.

100% Fruit Content: Apple’s Plan to Serve Up Their Own Content Delivery Network

With the announcement that iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 will take a bigger step into the cloud than ever before, the question of where that content will live has come up. Currently Apple uses companies like Akamai to serve their content around the world to the growing list of new markets getting Apple products, but should they bring that content back home and serve it themselves?

With only 2 percent of peak Internet traffic coming from Apple, does it make sense that they build their own Content Delivery Network and serve all their own data, or leave it to 3rd party services to serve it for them?

What is a Content Delivery Network?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) can be described as a system of strategically positioned servers around the globe. The key goals of a CDN are to make data fast, scalable, and highly available.

In short, a CDN stores and delivers data from servers placed around the world so every major market has a server with the data they want close to them. This means less load time and fewer pieces of lost data.

Adobe Releases Two Experimental iPhone Apps Powered By Photoshop.

Fix images and create silly photo mashups with these two new apps.

Last month, Adobe announced that it would allow developers to plug their mobile apps into some of Photoshop’s most popular features. Today, Adobe Labs (the experimental arm of Adobe) gives us our first taste of what that looks like with two new iPhone apps: Twixt and Fixel. They're not actually using the Creative Cloud, but they incorporate Photoshop technology to show what it could feel like*.

Twixt is a social-focused app that allows you to cut pieces out of your photos, then paste them on funny backgrounds. You run your finger over a subject, and Adobe attempts to spot the edges. Then you cut and paste the face, figure, or scene onto something else. I’d give the tool a B- in my testing, as the app’s general experience--from the UX, to the not-quite-zany-enough backgrounds--never elicits the feeling of fun. Cutting and pasting images from other images needs to feel surprising to get a giggle. (If the app were all about putting your head on strange other bodies, for instance, that would be delightful.)

Streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes," Nadella told press and analysts listening to the call.

Wow! One Windows OS running on phone, tablet, PC ,and gaming console? Not exactly. Later in the call, Nadella attempted to clarify his remarks, but not in time to stop the breathless headlines.

Smile - You'll Look Younger

Smiling more can certainly make you look happier, but can putting on a grin make you appear younger, too? Yes - according to researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany and Yale University in the US.

To answer this question, the team used a set of more than 2,000 photographs of models showing a variety of different emotions. The models ranged in age from 19 years to 80 years, and each adult was photographed conveying 6 different expressions: angry, afraid, sad, disgusted, happy and neutral. Same people showing different moods; without jewelry, makeup or eyewear, all in similar gray shirts.

Minimalism websites

White Space is enter in minimal website design.
Reduces is extra is the slogan of Minimalism Technology.

Minimalism is a design method that highlights simplicity and the exclusion of extra elements in a design, banding it along to its basic fundamentals, shapes, colors and textures. This method was rarely seen in the premature days of the internet, but now it is very trendy in web design industry. The three essentials of minimal design are stability, position and contrast.
